But It’s Just a Trash Bag….

Trash Liners are simple, buy one that seems to fit and will hopefully be strong enough for the waste that will fill it. Unfortunately, most people don’t buy the proper bag for their trash receptacles. This leads to wasted plastic and wasted money. Here are a few things to consider when buying trash liners.

Type of Resin

High Density: (HDPE) High Density Polyethylene bags are great for paper and non-sharp objects under moderate transport conditions. Suggested for paper products, food without sharp edges, grass and smooth heavy objects.

  • Puncture Resistance: Great
  • Tear Resistance: Good
  • Load Capacity: Good
  • Material Savings: Excellent

Low Density: (LLDPE) Linear Low-Density Polyethylene bags are recommended for sharper objects under tough transport conditions. Suggested for yard debris, metal with sharp edges, plastic eating utensils and food.

Gauge: Thickness

Low Density can liners are measured in mil thickness. One mil is .001”. Low Density can liners range between .35 to 4.0 mil. High-density liners are measured by micron thickness which runs 6 to 24 microns. 25.4 microns equals .001”.

Size

Trash liners are measured by their length and width when laid flat. 33 x 39 is a common trash liner size. The first measurement is the width, the second is the length. Below you will find how to properly measure the circumference of common trash receptacles. Simply measure the diameter to find your width, then measure the height of your receptacle and you will know what size liner you should be using. Ideally, you should have three to six inches of overhang on the trash receptacles.

WIDTH OF BAG REQUIRED = the total of 2 adjacent sides

HEIGHT OF BAGS REQUIRED = 1/2 the smallest of the four sides + 6″ (for overhang) + height of receptacle

WIDTH OF BAG REQUIRED = diameter of receptacle x 3.13 (pi) / 2

HEIGHT OF BAGS REQUIRED = 1/2 diameter of receptacle + 6″ (for overhang) + height of receptacle

DIAMETER is the distance across the top of the receptacle

CIRCUMFERENCE is the distance around the top of receptacle
